Satsuma ware originated in Satsuma Province, southern Kyūshū, Japan. It's known for its ivory-colored earthenware body, transparent crackled glaze, and intricate, richly decorated overglaze enamel designs, often with liberal use of gold.
A defining feature of many Satsuma pieces is the use of gold, particularly in raised relief, a technique known as moriage.
